A charismatic duo united by a shared love of music, Will Pound and Jenn Butterworth blend their improvisational styles incredibly well on stage. They share rather than steal the spotlight, and the result is an intimacy that is only possible when two artists truly understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses. It’s easy to see why their playful game of “musical cat and mouse” has found an audience around the world.

The Traverse Theatre hosted the duo in its bar area. The space was small, but that only added to its intimacy, with the bonus of easy access to drinks. Sitting so close meant we could see every glance and grin pass between them. My only complaint was the uncomfortable hard plastic chairs, but close proximity seems to be what these shows are all about, so it was a small price to pay.

The set was a great mix of high-energy, strong-beat tunes that gradually moved towards slower-paced sung songs, before finishing the night with a real high-energy banger. There truly was something for everyone, and the shift in mood never felt forced. Every couple of songs, the pair stopped to talk to the crowd. These chats, which they call “band meetings”, gave the evening a very improvised feel, which is exactly what the duo wanted: spontaneity.

To an untrained ear, some of the tunes may have sounded a little samey, but this takes nothing away from the brilliance of the talent on display. Will’s harmonica and melodeon playing was dazzling, while Jenn’s guitar work was the perfect partner, quick to respond and just as inventive. The interplay never felt rehearsed; one would throw out an idea and the other would answer it straight away. Watching them react to one another in the moment was a joy.

The gig was full, the music was superb and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. I have no complaints, and I’d happily go again. Highly recommended.
